SUPPORT OF A FOSTER CARE FAMILY
Our most cherished project consists in giving assistance and support to a foster care family in the SOS village – something that we have been doing almost since our club started - for about 17 years. It began by our visit there and giving them a financial present for buying a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner. At the time our foster mother Nada had four children. Two of them were a brother and a sister and one was a seriously handicapped girl. Since the time the family has accepted seven more children. With great pleasure and admiration we have followed our foster mother Nada bringing up so many children who could not grow up in their own families. We helped them every year not only by financial presents for holidays and Christmas, but also by giving advice in various fields (medical, law, etc.). Three of these eleven children have already entered their independent lives, they finished their studies or apprenticeships, got married and founded their own families. Nowadays Nada has four grandchildren.
We admire Nada for her selfsacrifice and very good character. Naturally there were many difficult moments in bringing up such different children but she always made the right decisions. She studied specialised literature and finally began studies of psychology and special pedagogy at the University. She graduated this year.
COOPERATION WITH ASSOCIATION ACORUS
Since the year 2002 we have cooperated with the Psycho-Social Centre Acorus, which provides help to people endangered by domestic violence to overcome their unfavourable social situation. Services provided respect human dignity, result from individual needs of service users and support development of their selfreliance and their integration into life without violence. The provided services: asylum shelter, special social counselling and help in crisis.
Service users are women or women with children (in case of social counselling also men), who suffer from domestic violence.
We help the Centre within the bounds of our possibilities by purchasing equipment for asylum shelters.
Once a year (or more often) we speak to some women who use the services of Acorus Centre and it is very interesting for us to hear how their situation changes.
COOPERATION WITH THE FUND FOR CHILDREN IN NEED
For almost seven years we have cooperated with the Fund for Children in need. It is a civic association that has been working all over the Czech Republic since 1990. They try to help abandoned, neglected and abused children – both intelligent and mentally disabled, healthy and handicapped. All these children have one thing in common: they lack the love of their parents and the feeling that they belong somewhere, that there is someone who cares. They cannot find help all by themselves so they depend on the help of the others.
The main activities of the Fund is looking for surrogate families for mentally disabled or handicapped children and for the children who cannot be placed in families by state authorities and institutions. The Fund provides financial help and guidance to surrogate families, helps ill-treated, abused, abandoned and neglected children, deals with reports about such children - even anonymous ones, helps children from children´s homes to start living independent lives.
We help the association within the bounds of our possibilities by financial contributions to their project "Klokanek (Kangaroo)".
The care in Klokanek is to provide a warm family environment instead of institutional children´s homes for those who do not have a family or who cannot stay in their family.
